SADGIRL CHLORINE

L.A. pop-rock trio SadGirl have shared a new video for single ‘Chlorine’, a melancholic ballad inspired by Otis Redding and John Waters. The song itself feels substantial, with reverberating piano chords creating a sense of space; space enough for a little escape. Much like their songwriting forebears, SadGirl’s magic is held in this old-time recording technique which perfectly suits Misha Lindes’ rock’n’roll troubadour voice. Speaking further as the band’s spokesperson, Lindes says "Chlorine is a melancholy ballad about loving someone, knowing it's destroying you, and loving them anyway. It's also a bit of a tongue in cheek variation on classic love songs which feature a "femme fatale" archetype. In an ideal world the track sonically calls back to the likes of "Cigarettes and Coffee" by Otis Redding, which I was obsessively listening to while working on Chlorine.” This nostalgic view on artistry extends further into the music video, with the femme fatale Chlorine being reimagined as a “John Waters trailer park princess”, thanks to director Nathan Castiel. The video, much like SadGirl’s songwriting, is a collage of themes from throughout the twentieth century, meaning that you can’t quite put your finger on the date, and instead come to appreciate this as a timeless tale of vintage pop. - Hannah Thacker
